Here’s one way to use fashion as inspiration for furniture design, literally cover a chair in it. Granted there’s more grace and craft that goes into creating pieces like the armchairs pictured above, by Clarke & Reilly. The Georgian Chair is a one-of-a-kind set of two, created as part of an exclusive collection for Blackman Cruz (visit and drool). These elegant pieces are upholstered in 19th century Mennonite petticoats, which gives the chair its incredibly extreme depth and texture. A Mennonite probably would have found this a little frilly, but I’m a sucker for anything that takes a poke at utilitarianism…

Check out Paper Chair by Mathias Bengtsson set to be shown this May at an exhibition of Danish Chairs in Milan. Not only is the profile of the chair extraordinary, but it’s the fabrication process that mad our jaws drop. The chair is entirely made of recycled paper glued together in layers and then carved by CNC mills into 2000 profiles which were then staked and pressed and heated to create one homogeneous three dimensional form. Two prototypes were made, one of white paper and one of black with parts interchanged to make two two chairs with inverse patterns of one another. Can’t you just imagine Surface Magazine doing an editorial with a model in Givenchy SS 2010 leggings and shoes strewn about in this chair?

A little nautical inspiration and a only 10 weeks from conception to completion and you get the ‘ Kurven’ chair by Designer Cody Stonerock. It’s a simple bentwood frame and stretched leather upholstery that gives it such a chic and effortless feel, and its just one of those chairs that almost works anywhere, in any room. I can work as both a focal piece or just as a the perfect fit for that corner you couldn’t find anything for.

The Ad Hoc Chair by Jean-Marie Massaud for Viccarbe.
Viccarbe designs for those that “live in the present and think of the future” and this chair is perfectly defined by that concept. Often related to a spider’s web, the Ad-Hoc Chair is a fantastic representation of organic design melded with and drapped over an orthagonal frame. Perfect for indoor and out, the chair is composed of a brass frame which may be finished off in laquered black or white, or orange epoxy. For those with deeper pockets a 24k gold version is available as well.
