Room XX by Miquel Barceló is a massive sculptural installation in the new human rights and alliance of nations chamber at the UN Palace of Nations in Geneva. I thought everyone could use some colourful inspiration, I think it’s appropriate how the project has obvious references to caves and caverns referencing back to the early history of the caveman which has now evolved into ‘intellectual’ discussion within the UN. I can see this inspiring the runway, can anyone think of any collections that references a similar aesthetic? I cant think of one… To read more about the project visit: designboom.com.

Fashion Show Venues #1
So as we know architecture can inspire fashion or be inspired by it. With specialty and destination collections becoming more prevalent, I wouldn’t be surprised to find shows at actual locations the collections were informed by. One such venue I could foresee being a destination would be the Blur Building on Lake Neuchatel in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland by Diller & Scofidio for the Swiss Expo of 2000.
The structure of the pavilion is composed of 13,000 fog nozzles that create a mist that responds to changing climates and winds to form a cloud-like form hovering above the lake. This concept of blur is intended to confuse sensory instincts by whiting out visuals and noise to only hear the spraying of the mist and see the blur of the cloud. Can’t you imagine a venue in which the audience and collection are held on this haze of an island with models appearing out of the fog to reveal collection? Movie projections could interact with water walla to create a more layered and dynamic imagery with music playfully interacting with the misting. Light on models skin and water repellent pieces would reflect beaded water droplets beautifully creating even more of a dream like/ fantasy environment. One problem, I’m not too sure where the walkway and seating would go, but I’m sure for a design house with deep enough pockets they could just fabricate their own temporary extension to the Blur… Get the whole story
A Couture Prediction…
So, the UK pavilion for the Shanghai world Expo was just recently completed and it’s already making headlines worldwide and for good reason. It’s phenomenal, composed of over 60,000 transparent rods creating a form that appears weightless and ethereal. What was the first thing I thought? I think we shouldn’t be surprised come next couture week when we see a gown composed of thousands plastic rods. Models will look heavenly with rods bouncing across the runways. But, they just can’t do a one off of the UK pavilion can they? So here’s how I see it happening… I can picture dresses of varying colors, from transparent to opaque white, from clear to pink, blue, black & white everything imaginable, varying from top to bottom left to right, diagonally and scattered across in patterns. There may be some of alternating depths and thicknesses creating drama through light and shadow, or maybe big chunks will be cut out à la Viktor and Rolf. Then there will be matching accessories with golden and silver rods mixed in and of course an incredible headdress that Lady Gaga can rock out in. Rods may transition from sticking out on end into weaving patterns, perhaps even with chic little frays. The possibilities are nearly endless… So who do you think will do it first? I can imagine Armani Privé, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, or Galliano for Dior….
Chanel Fall 2008 Couture, just a small sample of what I’m thinking, but I expect to see full gowns made of the plexi rods in the same fashion of the UK pavilion…
Fashion’s Future is 3D
It seems like since Avatar, everything is 3D. TVs with 3D can’t stay on the shelves and I think i saw a new 3D Macbook somewhere, we’re inundated. And like everything current, fashion will play out its commentary upon the subject of three dimensions. Burberry already jumped on the bandwagon with their last FW 2010 show that they available to watch live in 3D. But, I see this playing out much – much further….I can imagine three dimensional prints walking down the runway to a large interactive back drop, also in 3d, interacting with the collection before it. If anyone could have done it, it would have been Alexander McQueen. I can’t imagine any other designer working through the intricacy of figuring out designing such a difficult and complicated pattern that could work beautifully both with 3D glasses or with the human eye and then finishing and composing perfectly. Or, I could see Maison Martin and Margiela doing a 3D garment in juxtaposition to a faceless stocking covered model, that could really pop. Maybe, Marc Jacobs will put little 3D avatars or Mirikami on the next Louis Vuitton bags, or Prada will do their next plaid-like patterned dresses in 3 dimensions, the possibilities are endless…
3D Chanel Plaid!! Now that would be something, wouldn’t it?
What I really want to know is: When and where can I buy myself a pair of designer 3D glasses,? I’m sure Linda Farrow has it under control…
