Gianni Versace Villa Hotel

The well know Miami villa of Gianni Versace has been transformed into a 10 room luxury boutique hotel by famed Florida restaurateur Barton G Weiss. Prices start at $2,100 a night, what may be considered a bargain to stay in Versace’s old bedroom. The villa is rather extravagant with fantastical details and decoration, specific to Gianni’s own asthetic. It’s may not be quite my cup of tea, but it is rather extaordinary…

Chic Utilitarianism

Here’s one way to use fashion as inspiration for furniture design, literally cover a chair in it. Granted there’s more grace and craft that goes into creating pieces like the armchairs pictured above, by Clarke & Reilly. The Georgian Chair is a one-of-a-kind set of two, created as part of an exclusive collection for Blackman Cruz (visit and drool). These elegant pieces are upholstered in 19th century Mennonite petticoats, which gives the chair its incredibly extreme depth and texture. A Mennonite probably would have found this a little frilly, but I’m a sucker for anything that takes a poke at utilitarianism…

Westwood-Paper Couture

The world of interior design has often and consistently turned to the fashion industry for both  inspiration and partnership. So it came as no surprise when Cole & Son partnered with Vivienne Westwood for its most recent collection of wallpapers. Her quirky senses are purely expressed in the paper’s breadth of Westwood-isms, by referring back to the classic Vivienne ’squiggles’ from 1981-82, and the ‘cut-out-lace” developed from a piece of antique lace from her 2007 S/S collection. In order to celebrate the new line of wall coverings by Cole & Sons, Westwood restored the prints to their original forms, literally creating ‘wallpaper couture’, and thus bringing the collection to a full circle.

“This collection is a perfect opportunity to be able to work with a heritage company like Cole & Son and to see my ideas from fashion translated into the world of interiors and wallpaper.”

The Coat-Coat Hanger

Introducing  ‘Tabard’ by Denis Santachiara for Italian manufacture Pallucco. The illuminated coat hanger is a rigid shell reminiscent of the 18th century seamless overcoat, the tabard. Now the overcoat is the coat hanger, ironically reversing its historic role. The shell has the ablity to rotate 120° to reveal the hanging garmets within. What a fantastic fixture, I think a transparent version would be outstanding, I could see Barney’s using the Tabard in all their stores…

Colourful Creativity

Room XX by Miquel Barceló is a massive sculptural installation in the new human rights and alliance of nations chamber at the UN Palace of Nations in Geneva. I thought everyone could use some colourful inspiration, I think it’s appropriate how the project has obvious references to caves and caverns referencing back to the early history of the caveman which has now evolved into ‘intellectual’ discussion within the UN. I can see this inspiring the runway, can anyone think of any collections that references a similar aesthetic? I cant think of one… To read more about the project visit: designboom.com.
